Welcome to the historic
"Kickapoo Lodge" in Grand
Lake, Colorado.
The property was purchased from the Estate of Dorothy "Nursie"
Young, who owned the property from 1951 until her death on July 2, 2000.
Ms. Young, known to her friends as "Nursie", was a nurse who
served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War
II, from March 3, 1941 to February 4, 1946. One of her major
accomplishments was featured in the recent movie "Pearl
Harbor" when they showed one of the nurses using
lipstick to record which of the injured had already received morphine.
When Nursie was confronted with numerous patients who had been injured
and she had no way of telling which had already received morphine, she
pulled her lipstick out of her pocket and put a "M" on their
foreheads so that they would not receive an overdose thus possibly
killing them. When the war ended, she became the school Nurse for all
Grand County Public Schools. Later, she purchased, managed, and lived at Kickapoo
Lodge with her husband, Fred Young.
Nursie was a member of numerous veterans' organizations, including the
Pearl Harbor Survivors. Over the years, many fellow survivors from all
over the country visited "Nursie" at Kickapoo Lodge and enjoyed
annual reunions. Each year, Nursie was included in the Grand Lake
Memorial Day Parade.
The property will be
kept as Ms. Young left it, except for some upgrades and renovations, such
as new tubs, showers, sinks, flooring, cabinets, etc... There are six cabins,
of various sizes, which are furnished and include bedding, dishes, pots
and pans, range, refrigerator, garbage disposals, microwave, oven,
dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker, etc. A 28" television is
furnished with each cabin featuring cable, a VCR, and a DVD player.
The main house, where
Ms. Young lived, is called "Nursie's Lodge". It contains
memorabilia from her past as well as some history of Grand Lake
and local activities and services. Caretakers are at the Lodge so
employees can borrow books, videos, and other materials or just visit and
learn about local history and activities.
Also included, are six
new dock slips where guests can tie-up their own boats for use on Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain
Reservoir.
All
proceeds from the rental of the cabins goes to the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater
(RMRT), a live theatre group that features several different plays
throughout the summer. Please
visit their website for information on upcoming performances. Shows sell out fast, so get your
tickets early!
